Not to be confused with the chronometer, the chronograph is one of the simplest of complications to appreciate and arguably one of the most useful.
The selection of chronographs from the Oak collection for this exhibition show the mastery and elegance with which Patek interprets what is essentially a sporting function. There are more famous chronographs not least Rolex’s Daytona, but Patek Philippe chronographs have a finesse all of their own. Of particular importance is the Oak Collection’s Reference 1935 130J mono pusher chronograph with a two tone sector dial, the only known example of this type
Ref. 1579 J, made 1948, large yellow gold chronograph, silvered dial with applied and painted indexes, tachymeter scale, case with « spider lugs », manual winding, calibre 13’’’. So called « spider lugs ». The Ref. 1579 was introduced in 1943 and ceased production in about 1964.
Ref. 1579 R, made 1948, large pink gold chronograph, silvered dial with applied indexes, tachymeter scale, case with « spider lugs », with original certificate, manual winding, calibre 13’’’, stamped with the Geneva seal. Only 65 examples in pink gold are known to have survived.
Ref. 1579 R, made 1955, retailed by Gobbi Milano, special bezel, large pink gold chronograph, silvered dial with double signature, tachymeter scale, special « reeded bezel », case with « spider lugs », manual winding, calibre 13’’130, stamped with the Geneva seal. A one-of-a-kind example, retailed by Gobbi, Milan.
Ref. 1579 R, made 1946, large pink gold chronograph, pink dial with painted indexes, tachymeter scale, case with « spider lugs », manual winding, calibre 13’’’, stamped with the Geneva seal. This example is referred to as a “Monochrome Pink”.
Ref. 530 J, made 1949, oversized yellow gold chronograph, silvered dial with applied Breguet numerals, tachymeter scale, manual winding, calibre 13’’’, stamped with the Geneva seal. This is the only known of example.
Ref. 130 R, made 1940, retailed by Hausmann, pink gold chronograph wristwatch with pink sector dial and tachymeter, double signature, manual winding, calibre 13’’’. So called « Pink Sector Dial ». Retailed by Hausmann & Co., this “Pink Sector Dial” watch is one-of-a-kind.
Ref. 533 R, made 1939, pink gold chronograph wristwatch with black dial and pulsometer scale, manual winding, calibre 13’’’, stamped with the Geneva seal. The Ref. 533 was introduced in 1937 and ceased production in about 1957. With a black dial and pulsometer scale, this watch is one of only five known examples.
Ref. 1506 R, made 1942, oversized pink gold chronograph with pink dial, tachymeter scale and faceted elongated lugs, manual winding, calibre 13’’’. So called « Monochrome Pink ». Ref. 1506, with its elongated lugs, was in production from 1941 to 1943 and is one of the rarest chronograph wristwatches ever made by Patek Philippe. This pink gold example is one of only four known.
Ref. 591 R, made 1942, pink gold chronograph wristwatch with « rosé » dial, tachymeter and bean-shaped lugs, manual winding calibre 13’’’, stamped with the Geneva seal. So called « Faggiolino ». This is one of only two known examples of this reference.
Ref. 1463 J, made 1947, yellow gold water-resistant chronograph wristwatch with silvered dial and applied indexes, tachymeter scale, manual winding, calibre 13’’’, dust metal protection capsule. So called “Tasta Tondi”. Ref. 1463 was introduced in 1940 as the first water-resistant chronograph and production ceased around 1967. This reference, introduced in 1940, is now referred to as a “Tasta Tondi” watch.
